Pilot Projects - U54 Centers for Cancer Systems Biology

NIH FUNDED PILOT PROJECT GRANTS FOR WORK WITH TUMOR INITIATING CELLS (TIC) IN CANCER

With financial support from a U54 Center Grant funded by the NCI Integrative Cancer Biology Program, and matching funds from The Methodist Hospital System, The Center for Modeling Cancer Development (CMCD) at The Methodist Hospital Research Institute - in collaboration with BCM and The University of New Mexico - will be funding five pilot projects, one year in duration and up to $75,000 in direct costs starting June 1st, 2011. Indirect costs are not allowed under this funding mechanism.

The goal of the pilot projects is to further characterize tumor initiating cells (TIC) using computational methodologies and/or experimental techniques.  Another core aspect of this program is to encourage collaboration among researchers, it is therefore requested that any institutions applying for funding from outside the Houston area have a co-PI from TMHRI or BCM.  Each pilot must involve extensive investigation into TIC, not necessarily in breast cancer, but in any type of tumor. The research description in the applications will ideally be no more than five pages.  The application should be in the standard NIH grant format with hypotheses to be tested and at least two specific aims, background, significance, and experimental plan. Preliminary data with tumor initiating cells is not expected, but preliminary data pertaining to the overall hypothesis may be helpful.  The application should also include a reference page, biosketches of investigators, brief budget, and budget justification.

Applications are due no later than April 1st, 2011
