The Center for Cancer Systems Biology @ Vanderbilt invites you to the 5th Hands-on Workshop, Monday, August 22 thru Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center (VICC), 898 J Preston Research Building, Nashville, TN. Sponsored by the NCI Integrative Cancer Biology Program.
Workshop Objective
The 5th annual Hands-on Workshop will be held at the Vanderbilt University campus and will focus on the clinical challenge of acquired resistance to treatment with molecular targeted therapeutics in cancer patients. The workshop will particularly focus on the added value of systems biology tools to decipher novel strategies to combat development of resistance. The workshop’s “hands-on” approach aims at the design, construction and implementation of existing and novel systems biology tools (e.g., mathematical/computational models, signaling network reconstruction and modeling, bioinformatics) by the workshop participants who will be grouped into interdisciplinary teams (clinicians, experimentalists, modelers). The workshop is particularly intended to reach young investigators both in the biomedical and quantitative sciences with an interest in cancer. Furthermore, there will be a unique mix of clinical/surgical oncologists with systems biologists, since we will encourage participation of Vanderbilt-resident clinicians with direct efforts in targeted therapeutics clinical trials.
Workshop Goals
1. Recognize the impact of resistance to treatment of cancer patients;
2. Incorporate the knowledge gained into quantitative models by applying systems biology theory and tools; and
3. Cultivate interdisciplinary collaboration to promote the exchange of ideas, information and practical solutions.
