The European society for mathematical and theoretical biology hosts a tri-annual conference and has been doing so since 1991. The 7th conference, ECMTB08, will be held for the first time in the UK and is considered the premiere conference in Europe for mathematical biologists . Its attendees will be comprised of the majority, if not all of the European groups that work in cancer modeling but also will have a significant number of US attendees. In terms of sheer participants, more than 500 are expected, an extraordinary number for a mathematical biology conference anywhere. The ECMTB08 is the ideal venue to present and publicize the scope and achievements of the ICBP to the European modeling community, which has been historically very active in the cancer modeling arena. It is also a striking opportunity for recruitment of top students, postdocs and young faculty.

While there are European networks that cover various areas of modeling, including cancer, they do not approach the scale of the ICBP investment in resources and human capital. Among the Europeans, the more attentive are aware of the ICBP, and are active participants in some cases. However, a formal presentation with specifics appears to be timely, and will certainly arise tremendous interest and discussion.

We propose to dedicate a ECMTB08 minisymposium to a formal ICBP presentation. We have assembled a speaker lineup that covers the several levels at which the ICBP operates, and that communicate the collaborative spirit that has developed between modelers and experimentalists. The sensitization of cancer experimentalists to the value of mathematical modeling is perhaps the highest overall accomplishments of the ICBP: however imperfect, it is still among the greatest achieved by any organized effort. In this sense, it is key that one or two NCI representatives be among the speakers at the minisymposium, to properly communicate motivations, goals as well as risks and shortcomings of the ICBP initiative.

Minisymposium Organizer: Alexander R.A. Anderson, University of Dundee, UK

Format of Minisymposium
