"Mathematical Modeling and Clinical Oncology: The Road to Convergence"
The complexity of cancer requires the application of innovative modeling tools to integrate and interrogate the overwhelming flow of data produced by basic and clinical researchers. The 3rd Annual Workshop will focus on clinical aspects of cancer, including pathological features, disease progression and treatment. The Workshop’s “hands-on” approach aims at the design, construction and implementation of mathematical and computational cancer models by the workshop participants themselves, grouped into interdisciplinary teams.

As part of The European Commission Directorate-General for Research, the meeting of the European Commission's Conference on Systems Biology and Cancer will be held in conjunction with the NCI's Integrative Cancer Biology Program.
The European society for mathematical and theoretical biology hosts a tri-annual conference and has been doing so since 1991. The 7th conference, ECMTB08, will be held for the first time in the UK and is considered the premiere conference in Europe for mathematical biologists . Its attendees will be comprised of the majority, if not all of the European groups that work in cancer modeling but also will have a significant number of US attendees. In terms of sheer participants, more than 500 are expected, an extraordinary number for a mathematical biology conference anywhere. The ECMTB08 is the ideal venue to present and publicize the scope and achievements of the ICBP to the European modeling community, which has been historically very active in the cancer modeling arena. It is also a striking opportunity for recruitment of top students, postdocs and young faculty.

The Multi Scale Workshop is being held to bring together the dispersed communities of investigators focused on multi scale biology, drawing from NCI’s programs such as Integrative Cancer Biology Program (ICBP), Tumor Microenvironment Network (TMEN) and Innovative Molecular Analysis Technologies (IMAT), and other individuals focused on this topic. These experts would share approaches and technical solutions for collecting data at the cellular level and utilizing that data in multi scale projects.
The U.S. NCI cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid (caBIG™) initiative and the U.K. NCRI Informatics Initiative are already engaging in successful joint efforts to harness the power of these advances. The conference will highlight global grid initiatives and tools that are changing the biomedical research landscape through shared data, technologies, and collaboration. There will be sessions for both technical and scientific audiences.
Sponsored by NIH's NIGMS: the Quantitative and Systems Pharmacology Workshop will provide state-of-the-art knowledge and perspective about topics at the interface of systems biology and pharmacology to a highly diverse spectrum of researchers in academia, industry, and government.
The 61st Annual Symposium will bring together internationally-recognized scientists from academia, industry, regulatory agencies, and patient advocates to describe and discuss state-of-the art information about how systems biology is transforming cancer research, to M. D. Anderson. Dr. Lydia Kavraki (Rice University) will present the keynote address. In addition, Dr. Bernhard O. Palsson (University of California, San Diego) will receive the Ernst W. Bertner Memorial Award and Dr. Joseph Nevins (Duke University) will receive the Heath Memorial Award. There will also be a poster session for participants to present their research findings, and a Meet the Experts Luncheon for trainees. The symposium begins Thursday morning and will end Saturday at noon.
The OSU-IU Center for Cancer Systems Biology (CCSB, formerly designated as OSU-IU ICBP) has assembled a team of 25 computational and bench scientists to study epigenetic control of critical signaling networks in prostate, breast, and ovarian cancers. Based on our recent progress and preliminary findings, we will test the hypothesis that epigenetic deregulation of androgen receptor (AR), estrogen receptor a (ERa), or TGF-ß/SMAD4 signaling-mediated transcriptional networks underlies the transition of a hormone-/chemo-sensitive phenotype to a hormone-/chemo-insensitive phenotype in cancer. We anticipate that the study will yield significant insight into the role of permissive and non-permissive chromatin in cancer and drug-resistant disease.

A workshop for all junior investigators (senior graduate students, postdocs, research associates) associated with NCI's ICBP program. Goals of the workshop are to discuss the science being carried out in each ICBP Center, to explore career options and to network with each other for establishing cooperative projects.
The MBI Bootcamp on Cancer Modeling is aimed at young researchers in the biological and biomedical sciences, although young researchers in the mathematical sciences will both benefit from and be accepted into the bootcamp. The bootcamp will focus on three themes surrounding cancer
modeling: signaling pathways, tumor growth, and radiotherapy.
This workshop is designed to bring together experts in the field of mathematical modeling to discuss modeling applications in cancer systems biology. Systems biology employs a comprehensive exploration of biology attempting to understand the various components and interactions important in biology and specifically cancer. One of the most important tools in the study of cancer systems biology is mathematical modeling which allows for the analysis of large multi-dimensional data sets. These models can be very useful in making predictions of parameters needed to be measured, predictions of potential outcome of a process, and general theoretical insights into the underlying biology. The Integrative Cancer Biology Program (ICBP) supports Centers for Cancer Systems Biology (CCSB) charged with the development and application of these in silico tools. This 2.5 day workshop will explore the various types of mathematical and computational methods used by the centers to create their models and explore areas of shared interest and insight between the approaches taken by the different centers. Attendees will include 2 representatives from each of the 12 centers along with outside speakers as well as NCI - ICBP staff. Because of the diversity of modeling and biology within the centers, the workshop will be structured to be both educational and collaborative. Selected topics will include: Advances in Biological Mathematical Modeling, Applications of Modeling in Cancer Research, Challenges and Needs in the Field, novel mathematical methods under development, applications of methods developed in other fields as applied to cancer questions, and collaborations.
This AACR special meeting, co-sponsored by the NCI – Integrative Cancer Biology Program (ICBP), is the first open, national meeting planned by the ICBP. The meeting will focus on a systems biology approach towards the understanding and treatment of cancer and will examine the many components of the disease, simultaneously. This meeting will also identify the levels of complexity and discuss the various approaches being used to develop new insights in cancer research.

Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center's 1st Annual ICBP-CCSB Symposium.
GENSIPS'11 will provide a forum for researchers in the signal processing community, other related computational experts, and biomedical scientists to exchange ideas and discuss signal processing challenges due to the high modality of disparate high-through data, high variability if the data acquisition, high dimensionality of the data, and high complexity of genomics and proteomics systems. The theme of GENSIPS'`11 is cancer and computational biology and GENSIPS will feature prominent plenary speakers as well as special session in cancer research. GENSIPS'11 will be in conjunction with the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS), the world most famous and largest breast cancer conference, providing GENSIPS'11 attendees convenience to also attend SABCS).
