“Mathematical Modeling and Clinical Oncology: The Road to Convergence”

The complexity of cancer requires the application of innovative modeling tools to integrate and interrogate the overwhelming flow of data produced by basic and clinical researchers. The 3rd Annual Workshop will focus on clinical aspects of cancer, including pathological features, disease progression and treatment. The Workshop’s “hands-on” approach aims at the design, construction and implementation of mathematical and computational cancer models by the workshop participants themselves, grouped into interdisciplinary teams.
Objectives: 1) To gain an appreciation for the basic clinical features of various tumor types; 2) To apply mathe-matical and computational modeling tools to disease processes and treatment; 3) to promote interdisciplinary col-laboration and facilitate the exchange of ideas, information and practical solutions to cancer; 4) to develop a common language to bridge the gap between mathematics and oncology.
Workshop Format: The 5-day workshop will start on day 1 with a Keynote address followed by a networking session. On days 2-5, there will be a lecture by invited experts followed by “hands-on” working sessions. Each group will be assembled prior to the workshop to ensure a truly interdisciplinary structure (biologists, mathematicians, computer scientists, engineers, etc). Each working group will be led by two (2) invited experts in mathematical modeling and cancer biology. Each working group will report their model to all participants on the last day of the workshop. A panel of impartial judges will vote for the scientific merits of the models and a first place award will be presented.
Location: The Workshop will be held in the Student Life Center located on 310 25th Avenue South, on Vanderbilt's campus in Nashville, Tennessee

Call for abstracts: The organizing committee invites you to submit an abstract to contribute to the scientific pro-gram. All abstracts will be reviewed by the Organizing Committee. Accepted abstracts submitted by registered participants will be considered for a short talk and will be published in the Abstract Book. Abstracts are due on June 1, 2007. Submit your abstracts with your online registration.
Travel Award: Graduate students or postdoctoral fellows are eligible to apply for a travel award (up to $500). To apply, submit a one-page proposal describing your interest in the workshop and one letter of recommendation from faculty. The Organizing Committee will select applicants based on their statement of interest and the submitted faculty recommendation. Deadline for travel award is June 1, 2007.
